Functions: Graphs of Functions

Algebra. This section covers:

  • Transformations
  • Sketching the inverse function
  • Sketching the graphs of exponential and logarithmic functions

Overview

Transformations
Given the graph of a function f(x), you will be expected to be able to identify and sketch related functions. The table describes basic transformations and the examples below show combinations of these.

Thoughts

1. The section of graph in the first quadrant is part of the graph of f(x) = 1x

1x

Use the transformation-of-graphs techniques to establish the equations of the other three sections of the graph. (3)

2. The diagram shows the graph of y = f(x) where f is a logarithmic function. What is f(x)? (2)
